An Excerpt From Stella’s Diary

Dear Diary,

Their arrival was unanticipated: five fuzzy balls scurrying about on skinny little legs going CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP.

I don’t know what they are.

I don’t know why they’re here.

They’re smaller than my friend Wally but bigger than a biscuit.

Two red, two yellow, and one black-and-white checkered.

I want to play with them, or eat them…I’m not sure.

Each time I try to find out, they end up in a bigger, stronger box.

Also, I would like to note, there’s something strange going on with my old doghouse…

All these new developments have given me a lot to think about.

My humans feed crickets to these new additions. I don’t know why I don’t get any crickets.

They say,“chicky chicky chicky!”

I could be a chicky chicky chicky.

I could eat crickets.

A fenced-in area was set up outside so the ‘chicky chicky chickies’ can get some fresh-air and sunshine every once in awhile.

I stepped over the fence and got in with them.

They totally freaked out.

Not only just the chickens. Everybody.

You’d think I’m The Big Bad Wolf or something.

Meanwhile, the situation with the old doghouse became more perplexing.

It had windows, nesting boxes, and branches to sit on.

I heard it was for chickens.

I could be a chicken.

I would like to look out windows.

I would like to nest in a box.

I would like to sit on branches.

Problem is, I don’t fit.

I’m much bigger than the other chickens.

And since I’m the biggest chicken, there are special rules for me!

It’s SO UNFAIR!!

For instance: I can look at a chicken, but can’t chase a chicken.

I can sniff a chicken, but can’t bite a chicken.

I can’t step on a chicken, but a chicken can step on me.

Though at first it seemed so unfair, now I don’t mind. If I’m a good girl I get a cricket.
