‘Turkey Tour of 2013’ Kicks Off At Woodbury Heights Elementary
As a picture book author/illustrator, school visits are part of the job. Usually I’ll visit two or three schools a month, but suddenly I’m looking at a three month stretch in which I have over twenty school visits on my calendar. Also, I have a couple of conferences and bookstore signings. I’m calling this busy stretch the ‘Turkey Tour of 2013’. I kicked it off yesterday with a visit to Woodbury Heights Elementary in the southern part of New Jersey. I had an incredible visit. I almost forgot how much I love visiting schools!

I hit the road at 5:45 AM to beat the Philadelphia traffic. When I arrived at the school the first thing I saw was a welcome sign created by the art teacher. The people at Woodbury Heights did an amazing job preparing for my visit. All the children had read my books and explored my website so they were very excited. I began in my usual way: I drew a smiling Oswego Pete.
Next was my Powerpoint presentation...
...followed by the drawing part. Step, by step I demonstrated how to build a turkey using the four basic shapes: Hershey Kisses, candy canes, Twizzlers and slices of pie.
The children at Woodbury Heights Elementary turned out to be very good at drawing!
When they held up their drawings for me to see, I thought the turkeys were going to fly away!
We drew hamsters and Woolburs and penguins too! It was a lot of fun. A great big thank you to everyone at Woodbury Heights Elementary! You are awesome!
